How to increase your CRS score

1. Improve first-language results

Language is often the most flexible CRS factor. Higher results can increase direct language points and unlock stronger education or foreign-work transferability combinations. Reaching CLB 9 in all four first-language abilities is a particularly important threshold, but the exact gain depends on the rest of the profile.

2. Add or improve French

NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities can produce 25 additional points with weak or no English, or 50 when all four English abilities are at least CLB 5. French may also earn first- or second-language points.

3. Pursue an eligible provincial nomination

An Express Entry-aligned provincial or territorial nomination can add 600 points. Each province and territory sets its own streams, criteria and timelines; a CRS estimate does not determine provincial eligibility.

4. Update education correctly

An additional completed credential may increase core and transferability points. Foreign education normally needs a valid educational credential assessment, and the Express Entry profile should use the Canadian equivalency stated in the report.

5. Gain eligible Canadian work experience

Qualifying Canadian work can increase core points and interact with education or foreign work in transferability. The work must satisfy IRCC’s definitions; simply working for a Canadian company from outside Canada does not count as Canadian work experience for CRS purposes.

6. Compare principal applicants

For couples, calculate both eligible partners as principal applicant. Age, language, education and work-history differences can outweigh the 40 spouse-factor points.

Recalculate one change at a time

Record a baseline, change only the factor being considered, and compare the full breakdown. This avoids attributing transferability changes to the wrong factor and helps identify the highest-impact realistic option.
